Result driven anti-aging treatment – make Collagen Lift work for you!

There’s no doubt Skinbase’s Collagen Lift (Radio Frequency) treatment has a great effect on the skin and helps to improve tone, lines and sagging, not only on the face but the whole body.

It’s great to see such amazing before and after pictures of results some clients get even after one treatment. However, even if you don’t get the results that some people get it’s worth knowing why; what you can do to improve treatment effectiveness and what to expect long term.

Before and after one treatment

First of all, it’s important to understand what is happening to your skin during and after the process as it is a matter of biology and the natural wound healing of the skin.

According to Theresa Bloor from Moorlands Beauty Salon “…when collagen fibres are first formed, they don’t have a great deal of strength. They have to go through a collagen synthesis process to build strength to give skin tightening and firming (a little like baby muscles that have to grow and mature to provide more strength). So, the new collagen that is formed (from the Collagen Lift treatment) will NOT make the skin firmer until it has gone through that maturing process…” Theresa adds that this can take from 21 days to 2 years to happen.

(It’s worth bearing in mind whilst we talk about wound healing as a result of the application of Radio Frequency it’s not a treatment that causes agonising pain! In fact, it is far from that. The ceramic plates are warming and relaxing; many of my client’s nearly fall asleep during the treatment. It’s this prolonged warming that tricks your brain into producing more collagen because your sensory nerves from your skin are sending messages to your brain, warning it it’s being damaged, therefore starting the healing process more quickly.)

Aging starts at 25 years old

Another reason why some see a result immediately is the amount of elastin in the skin. The heat from the ceramic plate immediately constricts the elastin fibres in your dermis; giving a plumped and tightened look. You can see in the example below, while the model has minimal lines and sagging skin, the elastin in her skin has reacted to the heat and looks significantly plumped up immediately after the treatment.

After one treatment the elastin has plumped up

Elastin is an important protein that gives your skin its bounce and suppleness. However, age and lifestyle choices have a massive impact on how much elastin you have and maybe even how it reacts to the heat from the plates.

Managing  your expectations

During my consultation I discuss life style choices, your health and make recommendations that may help to improve the overall effectiveness of the treatment: –

Hydration – Are you drinking enough fluid? Good hydration of the body tissues and skin is an integral part of the conductivity of the treatment and synthesis of collagen. It’s recommended that your alcohol consumption is low before, during and after your treatments, as that impairs your hydration levels as does too much caffeine. In fact, avoid drinking a caffeinated drink before having your treatment.

Skincare – Are you adopting a good skincare routine? If not, don’t worry, it’s my job to help you with that. A liken it to having coloured treatments or perms on your hair. You wouldn’t pay to make your hair look good and then not condition it. Good moisturisers are essential AND they really do not have to cost the earth. The most important product you should consider using on your skin is an SPF cream of no less than 30 every day of the year.

Genetics – Many factors will affect your skin’s ability to heal and regenerate. What you inherited from your ancestors will play a big part in that.

Health and well-being – Are you well? Certain health conditions will affect new collagen production and healing rate. If you have an ongoing disease or disorder, it’s important to mention this to a therapist, no matter what treatment you have. There are too many to mention here but some health problems can be contra-indicated. It’s a therapist’s job to tell you if they can proceed or not and if they don’t know they may ask you to seek advice from a medical professional first.

A great alternative to Botox and fillers

Having a Collagen Lift treatment is a great alternative to Botox or fillers, whether you’re new to anti-aging treatments or want a result driven treatment with minimal downtime. You could have a one-off treatment, even just to see what it feels like (the effect won’t last too long though but great for a special occasion.)

A course of six is recommended to start with; you may need more depending on some of the factors mentioned above. This treatment is definitely progressive as the collagen needs time to regenerate and harden. Treatments twice a week would be great but once a week is fine if you have time or logistical problems. A course of treatments can last up to two years, but remember your body will break down old collagen; so, more collagen will need to be regenerated to maintain your results and increase collagen production. This is one of the reasons why a maintenance program is recommended after a course, usually every 4-6 weeks.
